This works well, since the lower screen becomes the controller while the top screen is the actual game. It’s a nice way to sort through large numbers of pictures. The photo-viewing app places a gallery of photos on the lower screen, and the selected photo on the upper. But the small screen leaves room for just a few lines of text. When you’re checking e-mail, the inbox is visible in the lower screen, and the individual message you select is above. The text you enter appears in a small box right above the keyboard, making it easy to read as you type. When you compose a message, the keyboard pops up in the lower screen, and the message in the upper. The dual screens also worked well with e-mail.

I could also switch to full screen, in which case I had to deal with the bar in the middle of the text. When I tried to read a Kindle book, for example, I could read horizontally on just one screen-and consequently was only able to view a paragraph or two of text at a time. Other book-reading apps, however, may not work the way Sony’s does. But I didn’t find it as distracting as I’d anticipated. I thought the screens, when held vertically, would be too narrow. You hold the Tablet P the way you would a physical book and view two pages of text. I was surprised to find, though, that reading on the dual screen using the Sony Reader app was a pleasant experience.

The Android Market, on the other hand, appears in only one of the screens, leaving the other a blank waste of real estate. When you’re browsing the Web, for example, you’re stuck with full-screen mode, and the split screen really ruins the experience. But other apps don’t provide that choice. With some apps, you’re given the option of viewing across both screens or on only one. Although it doesn’t disappear completely and you don’t lose any lines, text that appears under the bar can be hard to read. Images overlap across the two screens, so you’re seeing certain portions of a photo twice, once in each screen. The bar that divides the two smaller screens (each is 5.5 inches) gets in the way. The Tablet P’s dual screens are a great idea in a few situations, but in others this display format is not easy to use. (See our Ratings, available to subscribers, for more 7-inch models.) Although the Tablet P offers 3G access, it has only 4GB of storage and a 7-inch screen compare that with the 3G version of the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, which has 16GB of storage and costs $50 less. A $550 price tag for this device is prohibitive. Volume buttons were hard to press, and the speakers didn’t get very loud. The curved shape also causes the Tablet P to bounce around when you tap on the upper screen, since it doesn’t sit flat, even when fully opened.
And the Tablet P's 13-ounce weight is more in line with typical 7-inch tablets. Most other smaller tablets are half an inch thick or less. That’s just too hefty to comfortably carry in a pocket. But while it’s much narrower than other tablets, the Tablet P's curved shape (many have likened it to an eyeglass case) makes it quite thick when closed, at 1 inch. The folding tablet was supposed to easily fit into a pocket or purse. Here’s a first look at the Sony Tablet P.
Its tagline is, “Bring Fun into the Fold.” Unfortunately, in many cases, the Tablet P brings the fold into the fun, because the content you’re viewing is broken in half where the two screens break. Sony’s concept for its new Tablet P ($550) sounded pretty good: Make a small, foldable tablet with two screens that either work separately-one as a controller and the other as a viewer-or together as one larger screen.
